Why Fresh Wax and Sharp Edges Change Everything
You can feel a fresh tune on the first traverse of the day. The board runs quiet, keeps its speed on the flats, and the edges bite instead of chattering. Then a month goes by, the base turns chalky gray along the edges, and the board feels sticky and vague. Nothing broke. It just needs service.
How to tell your base is dry
Look at the base under light. A healthy base is uniformly dark and slightly shiny. A dry one shows white, chalky streaks, usually along the edges first because that is where the base runs hardest against the snow. A dry base is not just slow: it drags unevenly, which makes the whole board feel unpredictable.
What a full tune actually includes
- Base inspection and repair: filling gouges with P-Tex before they grow.
- Edge work: restoring the bevel and polishing out burrs, then detuning tip and tail so the board does not hook.
- Hot wax, scraped and brushed: wax ironed into the base pores, matched to the snow temperature, then scraped and brushed out so the structure can do its job.
A stone grind is the step up from there: it resets a flat base and cuts fresh structure when years of scraping have left the base sealed and slow. Most riders need one every season or two, not every tune.
How often is enough
Hot wax every 3 to 5 riding days is the honest answer, and once a month is a reasonable floor for casual riders. Edges depend on conditions: hardpack and icy days eat edge hold fast, while soft snow is forgiving. If you can scrape a fingernail across the edge without feeling it bite, it is time.
