How to Pick the Right Snowboard Size

Every week someone walks in, stands a board on its tail, checks where it hits their chin, and calls it a day. That chin test is a leftover from decades ago. It ignores the two things that actually decide how a board rides for you: your weight and what you want the board to do.

Start with weight, not height

A snowboard is a spring. Your weight is the load that spring is built for. Every board we carry publishes a rider weight range, and that range is the single most useful number on the spec sheet. Ride a board built for someone twenty pounds heavier and it will feel like a plank; ride one built for someone lighter and it will wash out the moment you push it.

Height only enters the picture as a tiebreaker. Two riders at the same weight with very different heights carry that weight differently, so the taller rider usually sizes up a couple of centimeters for stability.

Then adjust for how you ride

• All-mountain, a bit of everything: stay in the middle of your weight range. This is the right call for most riders.
• Park and freestyle: size down 2 to 4 cm. A shorter board spins easier, presses easier, and forgives sketchy landings.
• Powder and big lines: size up 2 to 4 cm, or look at a volume-shifted shape that keeps the float in a shorter package.

Width is the sizing mistake we fix most

If your boots hang more than a centimeter or so past the edges, you will drag toe or heel in a hard carve. Riders with US 11 boots and up should be looking at wide versions. This is also why we always ask your boot size before talking board length, and why a proper boot fit comes before a board purchase in an ideal world: a well-fitted boot is often a half size smaller than the sneaker size people quote us.

Use the range, then trust the demo

Sizing gets you to a range, not a single magic number. Two boards at the same length can ride completely differently because of shape, profile, and flex. The way to settle it is to ride the actual board. Our demo program lets you put real days on anything on the wall and applies your demo fee toward the purchase.
